Here are the parameters and a brief explanation of what we were looking for.

1. Taste

Since these are made using ragi, we checked how pronounced the flavor of the millet was. The seasoning, as per flavor labels, were recorded. Were these balanced? Appetising?

Finally, the freshness was noted too.

2. Texture

Light (on the palette and tummy) with crunchy, non-soggy bites is what we were looking for.

Saffola Ragi Chips – Detailed Review

Our experience with both Saffola Ragi Chips variants- Takatak Tomato and Masala Twist has been decoded in the following section.

1. Masala Twist

Our Experience

With a bold, pronounced crunch, this featured a flavor profile we quite liked. These cone-shaped snacks had a pleasing mix of masale and spices. They were well-balanced and no one component from the masala mix overpowered another. Generously seasoned, thumbs up for that. These tasted fresh, and the flavor of ragi wasn’t as noticeable. That said, there was a certain (very mild) sweetness that could be tasted towards the very end of the bite.

As for aroma, it was fresh, natural, and masala-rich.

Product Details

In a non-resealable pack with bold graphics, 80 grams of the product are packed. This is priced at Rs 46/- and has a shelf life of nine months.

The ingredients used are Cereal Product 59.1% [Ragi Flour (24.4%), Corn Meal, Rice Flour], Edible Vegetable oil (Refined Rice bran Oil), Sugar, Starch, Iodised Salt, Stabilizers [INS 170(i)], Natural Flavoring Substances (Tomato Powder 0.7%), *Spices & Condiments, Nature-Identical Flavoring Substances, Maltodextrin, Raising Agent [INS 500 (ii)], Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein, Flavour Enhancer (INS 627, INS 631), Dextrose, *Contains Chilli.

Mishry’s take on nutrition

A big thumbs down is that these ‘ragi’ chips contain only 24.4% of the millet. During our research, we also noted how these are made using certain artificial sweeteners like maltodextrin and dextrose, and additives like flavor enhancers, stabilizers.

However, a pro here was, this claims to have 50% less saturated fat than other snacks. And this is true. Compared to 100 grams of potato chips, which offer 11 grams of saturated fat, these Saffola Ragi chips have 6 grams for the same quantity.

2. Takatak Tomato

Our Experience

The appearance and crunch were fairly similar to the first variant. The aroma primarily reminded us of tomato-flavored potato chips. In terms of taste, these ragi snacks start with a sweet note and move towards a salty-savory profile, ending on a subtle sourness. To explain it in a word, these were addictive!
