There is one theory that states it was founded around the time of the Kushan empire in the Yarkand valley in Xinjiang, currently China. However, the term ‘kahwa‘ which means sweetened tea in Kashmiri also appears to be related to ‘kahveh‘, the Turkish word for coffee. Kahveh is assumed to have been derived ‘qahwah‘, the Arabic word for coffee.
