Our Review Factors

What were we expecting from 4700 BC Gourmet Popcorn?

Vibrant, bold flavors and fresh and crunchy popcorn were what we were looking for.

Did we find this?

1. Flavor

There’s no denying that these flavor pairings are quite unique. But do the ingredients marry each other well?

Do all flavors shine prominently? Does the popcorn taste fresh or was there an industrial aftertaste?

2. Crunch

Well-popped, non-soggy popcorn with a fresh, crisp bite- this is what we were looking for. What was the case with the five 4700 BC Gourmet popcorn variants?

3. Other Parameters

Under this subsection, we shed light on non-tasting parameters like price, packaging, shelf life, ingredients, nutrition quotient, and more.

4700 BC Gourmet Popcorn Flavours – Detailed Review

For our 4700 BC Gourmet Popcorn review, we ordered five variants- French Butter & Pink Salt, Sour Cream & Wasabi Cheese, Sriracha Lime Cheese, Hawaiian Barbeque Cheese, and Orange Caramel Chilli.

Adding to the latter three we reviewed in 2019, here is our updated review.

1. French Butter & Pink Salt

Price & Packaging

The wrapper is made of premium quality plastic and is convenient to carry as an on-the-go snack. It is not resealable which means you’ll need to transfer the contents to an airtight container if needed. A 35-gram pack holding two servings is priced at Rs 39/-. It has a shelf life of six months.

Main Ingredients

Corn (77%), edible vegetable oil (21%), edible mineral salt (1%), antioxidant (E 319), flavor, acidity regulator (E 330), and anti foaming agent (E 900).

A collective favorite.

Aroma & Appearance

These are jumbo-sized popcorn that had no prominent aroma. There were a lot of unpopped kernels too.

Flavor & Texture

This variant of 4700 BC Gourmet Popcorn had an average crunch. These weren’t oily or greasy but had a pleasing buttery taste. It felt light and had a balanced salt seasoning. The salt and butter were in sync, no one ingredient was overpowering another.

That said, the ingredient list and some claims were contradictory. It is labeled ‘French Butter’ but the pack says these are popped in olive oil. We believe the added flavor lends the buttery taste.

Flavor- 4/5
Texture- 3/5
  • The packaging feels premium.
  • These are jumbo-sized mushroom popcorn.
  • The salt and butter flavors were balanced.
  • This felt light and wasn’t too oily.
  • There were many unpopped kernels.
  • Butter isn’t used, these are popped in olive oil.

A fan of the classic salted butter flavor popcorn? We recommend grabbing a pack of 4700 BC Gourmet popcorn in French Butter & Pink Salt.

2. Sour Cream & Wasabi Cheese

Price & Packaging

A 35-gram pack is priced at Rs 39/- and has a shelf life of six months. This holds two servings.

Main Ingredients

Corn (62%), edible vegetable oil, cheese powder (9%) (cheese, milk solids, maltodextrin), onion, sugar, garlic, mustard, black pepper, chives, parsley, herbs, yeast extract powder, edible common salt, food color (E 160 B), antioxidant (E 319), acidity regulator (E 330, E 331, INS 270, INS 296), anti-foaming agent (E 900), anti-caking agent (INS 551), flavor enhancer (INS 627, INS 631), stabilizer and emulsifier.

This also contains permitted natural colors and added flavors.

4700 bc gourmet popcorn sour cream wasabi cheese
Dominant on the cheesy aroma, this variant lacked crunch.

Aroma & Appearance

These jumbo popcorn have a deep ocher hue. These featured a cheesy aroma.

Flavor & Texture

The ‘bite’ of this variant was a total flop. This lacked the crunch. However, in terms of flavor, this variant was fairly decent. The cheese was the most prominent flavor here. The wasabi flavor does not hit until the very end and it was quite subtle. This was a desirable aspect of the flavor profile as a mild wasabi pungency is always appreciated. It cuts through the cheese flavor and balances it out. The tangy, acidic flavor of sour cream beautifully combined the two other flavors (wasabi and cheese).

Flavor- 4/5
Texture- 2/5
  • The flavors marry each other well.
  • The pungency of Wasabi is mild and desirable.
  • The cheese and sour cream flavors tasted quite good.
  • These are certified non-GMO and devoid of MSG.
  • The popcorn had no crunch.

Cheesy and laced with Wasabi- if this flavor combination got you drooling, you should grab a pack of Sour Cream & Wasabi.

3. Sriracha Lime Cheese Popcorn

Price & Packaging

The packaging is similar with a change of color. However, the price has been hiked since our initial review in 2019. A 75-gram pack is now priced at Rs 90/-.

Main Ingredients

Corn (62%), edible vegetable oil, cheese powder (9%) (cheese, milk solids, maltodextrin), sugar, red chili, pepper, cayenne pepper powder, edible common salt, flavor, food color (E160B), acidity regulator (E330, E331, INS 260, INS 296), anti-foaming agent (E900), anti-caking (INS 551), stabilizer and emulsifier (E452).

These flavors worked well together.

Aroma & Appearance

Like other variants we tried, these were jumbo-sized too.

Flavor & Texture

Sriracha gets its heat from red jalapeno peppers and is only moderately spicy.

This variant of 4700 BC did full justice to the Sriracha claim. This starts with a tangy, cheesy, and subtly spicy mix of flavors. Towards the end, this spice kick intensifies. That said, this is still dominant on the creamy Cheddar cheese flavor.

Flavor- 4/5
Texture- 3/5
  • Commendable packaging.
  • The flavor profile was intriguing.
  • This was spicy, cheesy, and tangy- all balanced.
  • It is priced quite steeply.

If you’re a fan of munchies with a spice kick, we’d recommend grabbing a pack of Sriracha Lime Cheese popcorn by 4700 BC for your next movie.

4. Hawaiian Barbeque Cheese

Price & Packaging

This variant is packed in a rich maroon pack. A 75-gram pack is priced at Rs 90/-.

Main Ingredients

Corn (62%), edible vegetable oil, cheese powder (9%) (cheese, milk solids, maltodextrin), sugar, onion, garlic, tomato, mixed spices, edible common salt, flavor, food color (E160B), anti-oxidant (E319), acidity regulator (E330, E331), anti-foaming agent (E900), anti-caking agent (INS 551), sequestrant (INS 425 (i)], flavor enhancers (INS 627, INS 631), stabilizer and emulsifier (E 452).

The brand uses mushroom popcorn.

Aroma & Appearance

The ‘mushroom popcorn’ claim was delivered.

Did you know?

There are two types of kernels- mushroom and butterfly.

While butterfly holds the tendency to pop randomly or in irregular directions, mushroom popcorn pops round with a rough surface.

Flavor & Texture

‘Hawaiin Barbeque’ as the name suggests, we anticipated a sweet-smokey flavor. However, this was the complete opposite. The cheese and barbeque flavors could barely be tasted. The flavor was dominant on spice.

All-in-all, this was the least favorite of the five we tried.

Flavor- 3/5
Texture- 3/5
  • The flavor combination looked exotic.
  • Thumbs up for the detailed ingredient list.
  • This variant was straight up spicy.
  • The cheesy, smoky flavors were missing.

5. Orange Chilli Caramel

Price & Packaging

The price, packaging, and shelf life are the same as the above variants.

Main Ingredients

Sugar (52%), corn (33%), butter, corn syrup, maltodextrin, dehydrated orange peels (2%), coffee, edible common salt, red chili, flavor, soy lecithin (E322), antioxidant (E319), acidity regulator (INS 296, E330), anticaking agent (E900).

Aroma & Appearance

The popcorn was large-sized, like other variants in 4700 BC’s Gourmet Popcorn range.

Flavor & Texture

With the promise of an interesting melange of flavors, this variant was quite liked by our Team.

A blend of sweet and spicy, the flavors are subtle but they make their presence felt. This starts off as a mildly sweet popcorn and ends with a subtle spice kick. Moreover, the dried orange peels add a super subtle zing and zest that brings the sweet and spicy flavors together.

Addictive is our word for this one!

Flavor- 4/5
Texture- 3/5
  • The flavor combination is too good.
  • All ingredients shine through.
  • The packaging is fairly convenient.

Sweet, spicy, zesty? Looking for a little bit of everything? This 4700 BC Gourmet popcorn variant satiates all cravings.
