Our Review Factors

What are we looking for in King’s Ginger Garlic Paste? An aromatic paste with a fresh and well-balanced blend of ginger and garlic. We set our standards against a homemade paste, assessing how closely the packaged ones match its qualities.

1. Aroma

Both fresh ginger and garlic have potent aromas that can elevate the taste and aroma of ordinary dishes with just a smidge. Unfortunately, many commercially available ginger-garlic pastes exude an undesirable, sour, industrial aroma. We closely scrutinized the aroma to ascertain its freshness.

The key question: which aromatic (ginger or garlic) takes precedence in this paste?

2. Flavor

In this segment, we look at the following factors:

  • Is it pungent, sulfurous, citrusy, or a combination of these elements?
  • Balance between the flavors of ginger and garlic, considering they’re both distinctive and strong.
  • Freshness. This means there shouldn’t be any acidic, funky flavor which is off-putting and seems artificial.

3. Texture

The consistency of a ginger garlic paste can affect the texture of the dish it’s incorporated into. The impact varies depending on the recipe. In dishes like tikkas, ginger strands or garlic bits might be slightly off-putting.

However, in recipes such as rajma or chole, the effect would be minimal. Is this a smooth paste or a fibrous coarse mash? How significantly does this impact the texture of the curry/dish it’s added to?

4. Other Factors We Considered

What is the proportion of ginger and garlic in the paste? What other spices are there in addition to salt? Are there any acidity regulators or preservatives in it?

Moisture content

A ginger garlic paste with an excessive water content can encourage bacterial growth, resulting in rapid changes in color, aroma, and flavor. This further influences the cooking process, causing more splattering during cooking and, consequently, requiring additional cleaning on the backsplash and countertop.

In addition to the above factors, we also noted information on the price, packaging, and shelf life.

This paste is a light beige-colored mixture. It contains a good blend of ginger-type threads and slightly browned garlic paste.

The aroma is robust and pungent, with bold notes of garlic followed by an equally fresh presence of ginger.

Review Process

To evaluate the product, we chose to prepare a simple paneer-on-a-stick dish. In the procedure, we initially marinated paneer cubes in a mixture of ginger garlic paste, salt, and chili flakes. Subsequently, we grilled the marinated paneer on a pan using some oil.

Why did we select such an uncomplicated dish? Ginger garlic pastes are commonly utilized in marinades due to their ease of blending. Hence, we assessed the product using a simple grilled paneer recipe.

Flavor + Texture

The paste is neither coarse nor watery. This is of droppable consistency and mixes well with the dish.

Talking about the flavor, it is fresh in taste and has a decent moisture content. Overall, this paste achieves a pleasing balance between the flavors of ginger and garlic.
