While most store brought sauces are loaded with sugar, Troovy offers a healthy tomato sauce sweetened using jaggery. We tested the product to analyze its taste, consistency and most importantly nutrition label.

What are we expecting? We are looking for a preservative free and nutritionally better tomato ketchup with a pleasant taste and texture.

1. Taste

The characteristic base flavor profile of tomato sauce is highlighted through the sweetness and fresh tangy flavor of tomatoes.

• How sweet is the sauce?

2. Consistency

Going by the labels, this tomato sauce claims to be healthy. We scanned the ingredient list and nutritional information to assess how nutritionally better is this tomato sauce compared to other leading tomato sauce brands in the market.

Here we noted information on other parameters including – the price, shelf life and packaging details. 

Product Details 

A 220 gm bottle is priced at Rs. 198. It comes in a glass bottle with attractive and eye-catching packaging. It has 6 months of shelf life. 

Once opened, make sure to refrigerate the bottle and consume within 30 days. The sticker on top of the cap helps you remember the date you opened it on – it’s a nice touch!

Main Ingredients 

This is made up of – Water, Tomato (18%), Vegetables (Pumpkin, Carrot, Sweet potato, Onion, Green peas, Garlic), Jaggery, Natural vinegar, Salt, Soy flour, Cornstarch, Spices, and Natural color (extracted from paprika). 

Per 100 gm, it contains 114.49 kcal of energy, 1.68 grams  of protein, 26.27 grams  of carbohydrate, 23.80 grams of total sugar, and 0 grams of total fat. 

There is no nasty stuff – preservatives, thickeners and emulsifiers involved in the making of this sauce. This is what makes this sauce a better option compared to others as most of the leading brands selling ketchups, involve the use of preservatives. Ketchup in general incorporates the use of a lot of sugar. As you can see above, this has 23.80 grams of sugar per 100 gm. A good thing here is that it does not involve the use of refined sugar and instead uses natural sugar coming from veggies and jaggery. 

Though the calorie content of this ketchup is more compared to other leading brands (most of them have in the range of 83 kcal to 110 kcal), Troovy gains brownie points looking at the healthier choices of ingredients used. 

How We Tried It? 

We tested this tomato sauce three ways: 

• As is
• With fries 
• With everyday sandwiches and wraps

Our Evaluation 

The aroma of this sauce is similar to ketchup. It smells sweet and has a sharp tang towards the end. Visually, it looks like regular tomato ketchup, and has a very vibrant, dark red color. 

The consistency of this tomato sauce is thick yet flowy. The thickness of the sauce is due to the presence of all the starchy veggies used. Taste-wise, it is sweet like ketchup and has a pleasant tanginess. 

Is this tomato sauce a nutritionally better option? Yes definitely! 

Why, you ask? Looking at the ingredients list, Troovy offers a higher vegetable content. The ingredient list has tomatoes (18%) and various other vegetables like pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato, etc. These vegetables offer vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Furthermore, for sweetening the sauce there is no use of any refined sugar. This uses jaggery, a minimally processed version/form of sugar. While most of the other leading brands in the market, includes a higher sugar content and makes use of a lot of preservatives, emulsifiers, and other artificial additives.

Having said that, it does not mean that you give this in excess. It is still a moderated condiment.
