Summary

While Nestle A+ Mishti Doi is fresh-tasting and has a natural, refreshing sweetness from jaggery, the texture was not as impressive as it had some lumps and was uneven.

When it comes to regional specialities, the visual and olfactory aspects hold equal importance as taste and texture.

Mishti Doi is popular across the eastern part of India and is a classic Bengali dessert. In fact, most neighborhood halwais in West Bengal make small batches of mishti doi almost on a daily basis for consumption by the local population.

Our Review Factors

What are we looking for in Nestlé  Mishti Doi? We were looking for a fresh tasting, creamy mishti doi with a desirable, natural interplay of sweetness and sourness of the curd.

The parameters we set are –

1. Taste

Mishti Doi is relished for its caramel-like sweetness that traditionally comes from khejur gud. This delicacy is a blend of sweet but mildly acidic and sour flavors. The flavor of jaggery should not be overpowering and as a whole, it must taste fresh.

What is Khejur Gud? Khejur Gud is a type of jaggery that is typically used in Bengal desserts. Also known as date palm jaggery, this plant-based sweetener is in a semi-solid state as it is produced from the early morning sap of date palm trees. It has a silky sweet flavor.

2. Texture

Creamy but well-set with a smooth mouthfeel- this is what we were looking for. Was the consistency even throughout? Or was the surface too watery with  thick, dense layers at the bottom? How close did Nestlé Mishti Doi come to this?

3. Other Parameters

The ingredients, price, packaging, shelf life were gauged here.

Mishti dois are available from renowned halwais, so what’s the need for a packaged version? Since local delicacies aren’t limited to a particular geography anymore, brands are catering to the mishti doi-loving audiences with the packaged variants. These are meant for those who do not have access to freshly made mishti dois around them.

Nestlé Mishti Doi – Detailed Review

Price + Packaging

This Mishti Doi comes in a sealed cup. This cannot be resealed. One cup holds 80 grams of Mishti Doi and is priced at Rs 30/-. It has a shelf life of approximately fifteen days from the manufacturing date.

Main Ingredients

Pasteurised toned milk, sugar, jaggery (5%), nature identical (jaggery) flavouring substance, active cultures, and sweetener 960 are the key ingredients.

This does contain extra sweeteners and flavoring substances which are never a part of homemade counterparts, but considering that this is a packaged product with no added colors or preservatives, the ingredient list is decent.

The overall calories of Mishti Doi (or other milk-based desserts for that matter) are primarily influenced by the type of milk used. Additionally, the quality and quantity of sweetener used also play a key role.

100 grams of Nestlé A+ Mishti Doi offer 118 Kcal.

Generic Mishti Doi can range anywhere from 120-150 Kcal for the same quantity.

Aroma + Appearance

This packaged Mishti Doi had a delightfully sweet and refreshing aroma reminding you of jaggery. It had the classic light brown, caramel hue.

Taste + Texture

Nestlé A+ Mishti Doi had a simple yet decadent flavor profile. It had the caramel-like sweetness of jaggery with just a hint of sourness, like homemade dahi does. This Mishti Doi is sweetened with jaggery and sugar, but the sweetness is balanced and it has a fresh taste.

As for texture, it did not feel firmly set. There were large lumps in certain areas. We noticed a lot of inconsistency and unevenness in the texture. This did not have a smooth mouthfeel either.
