Our Review Factors

What were we expecting from Nestlé Milo cocoa malt milk beverage?

A fresh-tasting milkshake with balanced flavors of malt, chocolate, and sugar, a rich consistency, and an overall decent nutrition profile.

1. Flavor

An undesirable yet common occurrence with packaged milkshakes is a sugar overdose. We were looking for balanced sweetness with the sweet and nutty flavors of malt and decadence of chocolate.

Is the milk used fresh or does it have a stale taste?

Nestle Milo Cocoa Malt Milk Beverage – Detailed Review

This section covers everything we liked and didn’t in our Nestlé Milo review.

Price & Packaging

A tetra pack holds 180 ml of the milkshake. It comes with a paper straw attached to the carton. It is priced at Rs 45/- and has a nine-month shelf life.

Main Ingredients

Toned milk (80%), water, sugar, protomalt (2.8%) (starch and malted barley) (1.1%), cocoa solids (1.1%), acidity regulator (340 (II) and 341 (II)), stabilizers (412 and 407), nature identical and natural flavoring substances, vitamins, sweeteners (960), and minerals.

This contains milk and barley.

Protomalt – Derived from malted barley, protomalt fulfils the energy requirements for an active day.

340 II – Potassium phosphate is primarily an acidity regulator that also prevents formation of clumps.

341 II – Calcium salt of phosphoric acid is a food additive that regulates acidity/alkalinity of food and beverages.

412 – This is known as guar gum which is extracted from guar beans and is used for thickening and stabilizing.

960 – Stevia is a plant-based sweetener.

One serving (180 ml) of Milo offers 144 Kcal with 20.5 grams of carbohydrates (of which 14.6 is sugar), 5.2 grams of protein, and 4.5 grams of fat.

We compared this to other packaged chocolate milkshakes and found Milo is marginally lower in calories and sugar content. It also offers a slightly higher amount of protein.

Coming to micronutrients, the calcium and phosphorus content is similar but Milo’s Vitamin B profile is richer.

It comes with a paper straw but our pack was missing the straw.

The consistency was fairly decent. Neither was it too thick nor too thin. The milkshake was smooth and light on the palette.

First things first, the milk used tasted fresh. There was no underlying sourness or anything indicating that the milk had gone bad. It had the toasted nutty malty taste with a prominent cocoa flavor. The sweetness was balanced, not too overwhelming.

The flavor profile is sure to attract a younger audience.
