Our Review Factors
What are we looking for? We are looking for the tastiest chocolate shake with a well rounded chocolate flavor and sweetness. Yes, consistency and mouthfeel are prominent parameters but we weren’t looking for a thick café-style milkshake. Having said that, these shouldn’t be watery either. The milkshakes should be creamy and have a milky consistency. Although ingredients and nutrition weren’t primary deciding factors, a clean list will definitely help push the brand towards the top position.
Following are the parameters we set for this best chocolate milkshake review-
Are the chocolate flavors and sweetness in sync? Or does one overpower the other? Does the milkshake taste fresh? Was there a stale aftertaste, like that of milk gone bad? Did the sweetness taste artificial or synthetic? Was the flavor of chocolate appetizing or industrial?
2. Consistency And Mouthfeel
Was the milkshake thick and creamy? Did it have a smooth texture or was it grainy? Watered down? Was the consistency even throughout? Does it have a smooth, creamy mouthfeel.
Which brand had the upper hand here?
3. Other Parameters
- Nutri Label – The type of milk and sweetener used were key sub-parameters. Does one serving fulfill the daily requirement of calcium and other minerals, vitamins? Is the sugar content balanced or too high? What about calories and macronutrients?
- Price – Is the milkshake priced competitively?
- Packaging – Travel friendly? Tetra pack or bottle? Does it come with a straw?

2. Cavins Chocolate Milkshake
While Epigamia was the best-tasting contender, Cavins Chocolate Milkshake had the most desirable consistency. This was not the thickest, but it was the smoothest and richest of all the seven. Primarily, it was the creamy mouthfeel that had Cavins scoring 4 on 5 Mishrys.
Taste-wise, although we liked the balanced sweetness, the flavor of chocolate felt artificial. This also transferred into the aftertaste which brought down the experience.
One pack holds 200 ml of the milkshake and is priced at Rs 40/- It has a shelf life of nine months. The main ingredients are toned milk (86%), sugar, cocoa solids (1.4%). This also uses Flavor (Nature identical flavoring substances), Stabilisers (INS 415, 412, 407), Sequestrant (INS451(i)), Iodised salt, Mineral and Vitamin premix (Zinc, Vitamin A and D).
One pack offers 215 Kcal with 6 grams of protein and 33 grams of sugar.
- Best consistency
- Smoothest mouthfeel
- Contains vitamin premix
- The flavor of chocolate is slightly artificial
- Contains the highest quantity of sugar
3. Britannia Winkin Cow Chocolate Thick Milkshake
Providing complete justice to the tag, this was one of the two thickest chocolate milkshakes we reviewed. The consistency was smooth, there were no lumps or graininess. That being said, it was not the most decadent experience as the flavor profile was dominant on milkiness than the flavor of chocolate. The sugar added was way more than required, leading to an overly sweet milkshake.
This is available in PET bottles as well as tetra packs. 180 ml is priced at Rs 35/- and has a shelf life of six months. The main ingredients are Double toned milk, Sugar, Water, Cocoa solids (1.4%), Emulsifiers and stabilizers (471, 415, 412 & 407), Nature identical & artificial (vanilla) flavoring substances, Acidity regulator (339ii) and Iodised salt.
180 ml offers 196 Kcal with 29 grams of sugar and 7.2 grams of protein.
- Surprisingly thick
- Smooth mouthfeel
- The chocolate flavor is slightly artificial.
- Too sweet
4. Dark Fantasy Chocolate Shake
The flavor of Sunfeast Dark Fantasy Chocolate Shake was contrasting. It had an intense aroma and flavor of dark chocolate. However, the sweetness was a tad bit over the top. We could also sense the graininess of cocoa on the palate. It had a thick consistency, but overall, we did not really like the mouthfeel.
This had the deepest brown hue, as suggested by the name. A 180 ml bottle is priced at Rs 40/- with a nine-month shelf life. This is made with toned milk (80.5%), water, cocoa solids (1.32%). It also contains Nature identical flavoring substances, Stabiliers (INS 407 and 412), Emulsifier (mono and diglycerides of fatty acids from palm oil), Belgian chocolate (0.1%), Emulsifier (Lecithin from soybean and natural flavors and natural flavoring substances, Artificial flavoring substances (Chocolate, vanilla), Acidity regulators (INS 339(iii)) and Iodised salt.

- Bitterness justifies the ‘dark’ in the name tag
- Not too smooth
5. Hershey’s Chocolate Flavour Milkshake
If we had to describe this milkshake in a word, it would be ‘mediocre’. Although this is a thick milkshake with a creamy mouthfeel, the flavor of chocolate isn’t as fresh or bold as our winner. It wasn’t too bad, neither was it great. The sweetness was much higher than average. Another drawback was its synthetic smell of cocoa.
180 ml of this milkshake is offered in a tetra pack, priced at Rs 40/- with a shelf life of 10 months. The ingredients used are Water, Milk solids (11%), Sugar, Cocoa solids (0.75%), Mineral (calcium carbonate), Emulsifier (460i, 466, 471), Flavors (Nature identical flavoring substances), Sequestrant (339 ii), Thickener (415, 407), Edible common salt, Mineral (Zinc sulfate), Vitamin E (Acetate), Vitamin A(Acetate), Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol),Vitamin B1 (Thiamine Chloride Hydrochloride), And Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin).

- Creamy mouthfeel
- Thick milkshake
- Flavor of chocolate not as bold in comparison
- The aroma of cocoa is not as fresh
6. Mother Dairy Chocolate Milkshake
This didn’t work for us because of two things – overbearing sweetness and the industrial flavor of chocolate.
The consistency is like a rich, semi-thick milkshake with a creamy mouthfeel. The aroma was a mix of milky and chocolatey notes. However, the flavor of chocolate felt too industrial, despite containing the highest proportion of chocolate (4%) among all contenders. Overall, this was average.
A 180 ml pack is priced at Rs 30/- with a shelf life of six months. The main ingredients are Milk, Sugar, Water, Chocolate (4%), Milk solids, Caramel color (plain- 150a), Nature identical flavoring substances, Acidity regulator (339(ii)), Stabiliser (407).
One pack offers 190 Kcal with 5.6 grams of protein and 29 grams of sugar.

- Smooth and creamy
- Flavor of chocolate seems very artificial.
7. Real Milk Chocolate Frappe Milkshake
More than a chocolate milkshake, this was sweetened milk with a hint of chocolate. The chocolate flavor was present, but it was not as pronounced. As for the consistency, this was thick with a smooth mouthfeel.
A 180 ml pack is priced at Rs 35/- with a shelf life of seven months. Toned milk (87.5%), Sugar, Cocoa powder (1%), Calcium carbonate, Stabilisers (INS407 and INS418), Acidity regulator (INS 339 (iii)), Emulsifiers (INS 471), Iodised salt, Vitamin D, and flavors (nature identical flavoring substance) are the main ingredients.
